Original Title:

Alex and Emma

This dismal romantic comedy from the usually dependable Rob Reiner (Stand By Me, When Harry Met Sally, A Few Good Men) fell so short of expectation that it went straight to video in the UK.

Luke Wilson is a charmless writer with pressing gambling debts who must appease a persistant loan shark by completing his novel within 30 days. Somehow he manages to win over a stenographer Emma (Kate Hudson) while dictating his novel, her interjections and alterations becoming unexpectedly helpful.

You'd think that cutting to the novel in question - which also starred the two in '20s dress - would be a welcome respite, but sadly it turns out to be just as insipid and devoid of character.

A miserable failure on every count.
