Drowning in a sea of familiarity


Danger Close’s follow up to the 2010 lacklustre reboot of EA’s former reigning shooter champ is drowning in a sea of gaming tropes.

It’s (barely) saved only by the strength of the chatter penned by the Tier 1 Operatives it draws its inspiration from, and the clever weaving of a series of ingenious driving sections through the bustling, sandstorm ridden streets of Pakistan and the monsoon ravaged Philippines.

Everything else is simply a highly polished cliché – with the exception of the horribly misguided and freakishly animated soap opera moments between one of the game’s multiple leads (Preacher) and his estranged wife and child.
These single player snafus are elevated just a little more in Warfighter’s meaty multiplayer campaign. While it’s no Call Of Duty or Battlefield it does have its moments as it attempts to kick all the usual game modes into play.

There are variations of Capture The Flag, King Of The Hill and even Battlefield’s Kinetic Rush mode, but its standout feature is are the Fireteams, where you’re paired with an online buddy and have to battle it out as Tier 1 special forces soldiers. It’s the closest Warfighter comes to brilliance, but those moments are short-lived once the single player missteps – clunky AI and gameplay glitches – start to creep in. If you’re desperate for a shooter fix in the run up to COD, mark it down as a rental at most.
