Featuring over 40 of the biggest and baddest names in hip-hop – including Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhymes, Xzibit and Ludacris – The Takeover is virtually identical to earlier home console versions in the brutal Def Jam series, but with a few subtle tweaks that make for faster, more violent scraps.

The number of dirty moves has been greatly expanded, allowing players to scoop grit from the floor and throw it in their rival’s face, giving them enough time for a cheap punch or throw that can dramatically change the direction of a fight. Conversely, anyone quick enough on the buttons can use the game’s enhanced counter moves to turn the tables and deflect attacks, making for thrilling, fluid battles when two equally-matched opponents step into the fray.

The series’ humorous character creation system, based on a police artist’s impressions, also returns in this compelling brawler, and even though it’s not as slick as Tekken: Dark Resurrection, The Takeover is still a solid choice for gloves-off, PSP fisticuffs.
