With the shelves at HMV straining under the weight of a million shooting games, any gun-totin’ adventure hoping to make an impact has a battle on its hands. But, against all odds, The Chronicles Of Riddick’s spin-off game has turned out to be one of the best Xbox blasters yet.

A prequel to the current Vin Diesel movie, Chronicles finds the slap-headed antihero trying to escape from Butcher Bay, a futuristic, maximum security prison. An exciting blend of shooting, stealth, hand-to-hand combat and platform-hopping, the game mixes genres with skill and imagination, constantly throwing new challenges into the mix.

A multiplayer mode would have been the crowning glory, but it’s only a minor criticism of an otherwise thrilling adventure.
