★★★★

Part remake, part multiplayer expansion and part new game, Assault On Dark Athena is an opportunity for players to get to grips with a gaming gem that was all-but forgotten in the transition between the Xbox 360 and its bulky predecessor.

Based on the brutal adventures of Vin Diesel’s antihero from The Chronicles of Riddick, Dark Athena features the complete Escape From Butcher Bay game released in 2004, upgraded with smarter enemies, improved graphics and a range of vicious new attacks that will delight habitual gorehounds. To sate seasoned fans, Dark Athena also includes a brand new episode that sees Riddick attempting to escape from a grimy pirate ship; the dark, adult tale brought to life by superb scripting and excellent voice acting that adds a fresh layer of sheen to the already gripping action.

Best of all, though, Dark Athena features a range of imaginative multiplayer modes where players can test the game’s sickening attacks on each other, the most fun being the Pitch Black game where heavily armed soldiers are stalked by a Riddick armed only with knives, but whose ‘eyeshine’ allows him to see in the darkness and ambush rivals.
