Tom Hardy is no stranger to taking on tough characters on screen – troubled superhero Eddie Brock in Venom; the infamous Kray twins in Legend; the violent, imposing Bane in The Dark Knight Rises. His next role could be even more intense than those – according to Deadline, it looks like Hardy is going to play a notorious serial killer in the new Apple TV+ drama series Lazarus.

Based on the Joona Linna book series by Lars Kepler (a pseudonym for Alexandra Coelho Ahndoril and Alexander Ahndoril), Lazarus sees an emaciated young man found wandering along a train track. Over a decade earlier, he and his sister went missing, and were presumed to be victims of multiple murderer Jurek Walter (Hardy). A search for the sister is launched, headed up by police detective Saga Bauer, set to be played by Joker and Atlanta star Zazie Beetz. Bauer goes undercover in a maximum-security psychiatric hospital where Walter resides since his arrest to try and get some details out of him – and, yep, if that’s sounding familiar, there’s definitely a Hannibal Lecter-Clarice Starling vibe to all of this.

The series is still nearing development and closing deals, but keep an eye out for more details soon.
