Matthew Lillard stans, assemble! It's been a hell of a few months for the millennial icon, who's found himself joining the MCU for Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, readying a return to the role of Stu Macher in Scream VII, booking a slot in the second season of Prime Video's Cross, and enjoying rave reviews for his work in Mike Flanagan's upcoming Stephen King adaptation The Life Of Chuck. And speaking of Flanagan and King adaptations, Deadline are reporting that Lillard is gearing up to head into the Flanaverse once more for Carrie, the filmmaker's Amazon bound eight-part series based on the Master of Horror's telekinetic coming-of-age tale.
At this stage, Lillard is believed to have only just entered talks for a role in Flanagan's show, meaning we have no details on who the Scooby-Doo actor is in the frame to play in the series. We do however know that he'd be joining up-and-comer Summer H. Howell and The 4:30 Movie's Siena Agudong on the call sheet, with the former already confirmed to be playing bullied teen Carrie White and the latter attached to star alongside as tormentor-with-a-guilty-conscience Sue Snell. Intriguingly, while Flanagan's Carrie is expected to follow the story of King's book as Brian De Palma's 1976 classic did before it, with Carrie still being a troubled kid who discovers she has telekinetic powers while dealing with abuse at home and school, this new longform interpretation has consistently been referred to as 'a reimagining' rather than a straight-up adaptation. Given the fairly trim 300ish pages King's book runs to, we fully expect Flanagan to open up Carrie's story here and dig deeper into the ideas surrounding religion, abuse, isolation, and adolescent angst that permeate the source material.
Before Carrie arrives on our screens, we can look forward to seeing that first Flanagan x Lillard team-up, The Life Of Chuck, on 22 August. We are at least fairly confident that one will have less pigs' blood, electrocutions, and raging infernos in it — but still just as much Lillard, so it's not all bad news!
