Robert Downey Jr. in particular has been talking about the idea for years, but a third outing for the Sherlock Holmes film franchise that sees him teamed with Jude Law's Dr. Watson has never quite seemed to fit into his schedule, or been able to coalesce. That has now changed, with Warner Bros. announcing the movie for Christmas 2020.

While Guy Ritchie directed the first two, his name was missing from the announcement. Which doesn't necessarily mean he won't be back behind the camera; it's either that his deal hasn't closed yet or he'll be too busy focusing on his new crime pic Toff Guys.

So far, the only confirmed details are the participation of Downey and Law, with Narcos co-creator Chris Brancato on script duty. Warners is aiming to have the film in cinemas – probably day and date – on 25 December 2020. Which is just one week after Avatar 2 is scheduled to arrive. Happy Holmesmass?
