Ethan Hawke starred in The Purge for the Blumhouse team, and he's reuniting with producer Jason Blum on a very different sort of project. He'll co-write and star in a miniseries based on James McBride's novel The Good Lord Bird.

McBride's 2013 National Book Award-winner follows a young slave who joins up with abolitionist leader John Brown (Hawke will play Brown) and eventually participates in the 1859 raid on an army depot. Intended by Brown to ignite a revolt by those in bondage, it didn't have the requisite effect, but is widely believed to have helped kick off the Civil War.

Fear The Walking Dead's Mark Richard is also working on the script for the adaptation, which is close to Hawke's heart as it's one of his favourite books. There's no indication yet where the company will try to place the eventual series, but it already has shows readying to screen on the likes of HBO in the States.

Hawke will be back on the big screen in First Reformed, which is out in the UK on 13 July.
