This US remake of the barmy French car-chase thriller sublimates some of the original's wilder impulses to create an appealing buddy comedy. It involves Fallon's hapless undercover cop (who can't drive) teaming up with unlikely New York cabbie Latifah (who motors like Mansell) to track down a series of bank-robbing Brazilian supermodels (led by Li'l Leo's on-off ladyfriend, Gisele Bundchen). So, still a bit barmy, then, and as buddy comedies go, this is hardly Midnight Run 2.
However, Latifah and Fallon have an easy chemistry, while director Tim Story, who was given Fantastic Four on the strength of this, capably handles the cheesy gags and va-va-voom car chases. It's loud, it's stupid, yet against all the odds, enjoyable. But between this and Collateral, you could be excused for never wanting to get into a cab again.
