Tootsie Review
A struggling actor with a bad reputation (Hoffman) changes his name from Michael Dorsey to Dorothy Michaels and finds success as the fairer sex, starring in a popular soap opera. When he falls in love with a female co-star (Lange), he's forced to either keep it under his false breasts, or come clean and turn himself into a national laughing stock.
Dustin Hoffman didnt win an Oscar for this one, but hes superb as the tetchy actor no one will hire until he dresses up as a woman and lands a part in a TV soap. The sequins and the lip gloss hide a genuine vulnerability that Hoffman manages to bring the role, despite the farcical feel of it all. Jessica Lange, Bill Murray, Sydney Pollack and Geena Davis are all in fine form supporting what is, marvellously, a one-man show.
As hilarious as it is touching and tasteful at the same time, Tootsie will offend no one and uplift anyone who watches it.
A sparkling turn by Hoffman and an absolutely fabulous cast make this a risk - and a risque - success.
