Jim Jarmusch's first colour film is less understated and more inviting than those he made before, which may have as much to do with the constant presence of Elvis (in one form or another) as the rich seam of oddball humour and stylish cinematography.
A trio of separate but coincidental stories involving foreigners - Japanese, Italian and English respectively - all converge on a fleapit Memphis hotel where the desk is manned by Screamin' Jay Hawkins and Spike Lee's younger brother, Cinque.
A fine cast also features Steve Buscemi, Elizabeth Bracco, Nicoletta Braschi and the late Joe Strummer.
