Writer/director/star John Cameron Mitchell opens up his impressive stage show, which was basically a night club act-cum-monologue, into something like a narrative film, with an inevitable toning-down of the effect. Despite dodgy animated scenes, Hedwig remains an astonishing creation, and the good lines remain sharp - asked, with reference to I Will Always Love You if love really does last forever, she snaps, 'I don't know, but this song does.' It all holds together well enough to be fascinating despite it's wobbly bits - which is, in Hedwig's circumstance, somewhat ironic.

Hedwig is an Easy German who has a botched sex-change operation to be able to marry an Amerian GI. She finds herself stranded in a Kansas trailer park and ends up touring seafood restaurants with her rock band while, back home, the Wall is coming down. But those aren't the limit of her problems...
