This elegant misfire from Francis Ford Coppola lushly evokes an era of style, luxury, exhilarating music and murderous organized crime.

Brylcreemed innocent Richard Gere just wants to be left alone to play his trumpet in a jazz stylee. But big-shot gangster "Dutch" Schultz (a crazed James Remar) has an entirely different future in mind for him.

The film's period settings and spectacular on-stage showbiz set-pieces are fabulous, its meandering script much less so. The thing feels like a movie with its heart ripped out.
