Besides horrors, Hammer also made prehistoric girlie movies (One Million Years BC) and macabre adventures like this very 60s retread of H. Rider Haggard's classic tale of an immortal queen and a lost African civilisation. Explorer Gushing and high priest Lee, not to mention comic relief Bernard Cribbins, take the back seat to icily beautiful tyrant Ayesha (Andress) and John Richardson, the wooden reincarnation of her lost lover. Though obviously an epic done on the cheap, this has the usual excellent sets and costumes, plus an outstandingly romantic music score. Andress appears in her most memorable role, apart from playing a Bond girl, although sadly both are down to the costumes over her ability to act.

One of the more widely seen Hammer Horrors, yet bizarrely with less gore, this stays memorable for Andress' performance as the commanding Ayesha. Although it obviously didn't have the budget of other Hammer films, it still has an epic quality.
