Utopia has had a complicated history on TV. Channel 4's version was a cult favourite, unfairly cancelled after two series. David Fincher spearheaded a US version at HBO, which also featured Gone Girl's Gillian Flynn as part of the creative team, but that didn't succeed. Since Amazon picked up the rights (and Flynn's services as show runner), there's been more positive progress, and the show is on the way next month. Check out the latest trailer...
Originally created by Dennis Kelly, the 2013 original series set things in motion with the discovery of a manuscript for a legendary graphic novel known as The Utopia Experiments, long shrouded in mystery. When a small group of previously unconnected people unite in their shared interest, things take a much darker turn.
It turns out that they are by no means the only ones interested in the manuscript. Targeted swiftly and relentlessly by a murderous organisation known as The Network, the terrified group are left with only one option if they want to survive: run.
The viral theme makes it all the more topical (even if it could hurt the show's entertainment value), and we'll see whether this new version develops anything like the following of the original.
This version features Sasha Lane, Rainn Wilson, Ashleigh LaThrop, Desmin Borges, Farrah Mackenzie, Christopher Denham and John Cusack. The show will land on Amazon on 25 September.
