Those of you who suspected as much will not be surprised to find that Titanic took one or two liberties with the facts in its depiction of events. This was confirmed when Fox/Paramount handed over an $8,000 donation to the family of William Murdoch. Murdoch, who was reported as acting heroically during the real sinking, was portrayed as a coward in the movie, shooting two passengers as they board a lifeboat before committing suicide. Following uproar in Murdoch's home town of Dalbeattie, in Scotland, Fox have donated the money by way of an apology. The money will be reportedly be used to fund a scholarship for local children to compete for a place at the Dalbeattie High School. Murdoch's nephew, Scott Murdoch, was reported as saying, "This is Fox's way of saying that they did make a mistake in the film. I'm very pleased that the school has had a donation because the children have always been taught that Murdoch was a hero - as, indeed, he was." --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
