An executive at 20th Century Fox have conceded that "there is no irrefutable link" between the movie character and the real character, William Murdoch. In the film Murdoch is shown shooting passengers trying to board lifeboats and them shooting himself. The real Murdoch gave his lifejacket to another and is reported to have shown great heroism before drowning in the disaster. In Murdoch's home town Dalbeattie, Scotland there is a plaque honoring him in the town hall. Fox executives will contribute
