A South Korean domestic spy thriller titled Swiri has finally overturned the nation's 2.26 million audience record set in place last year by Titanic - and averaging 30 times cheaper than your average Hollywood movie, the South Korean film industry is revelling in its success. With dispute still raging about US efforts to open up the South Korean market, the film has fast become a source of national pride, speeding past James Cameron's blockbuster since its February release. The most expensive film in Korean history at 3.1 billion won ($2.6 million) and based on the upcoming 2002 World Cup soccer finals set to be co-hosted by South Korea and Japan, Swiri is a tale of intrigue and romance across the divided peninsula and as such has reached its audience by striking a chord over the issues dividing the country.
