The 51st Times BFI London Film Festival, boaster of world's longest title for a filmic shindig, started with a right ol' knees up last night as Eastern Promises kicked off two weeks of cinema from around the world.

Director David Cronenberg and star Naomi Watts strutted the red carpet in support of the movie about Russian gangsters in London and their entanglement with a do-gooding mid-wife. And Empire's seasoned video diarists, Sam Toy and Chris Hewitt, were stationed outside the Odeon Leicester Square to talk to the stars and generally make a nuisance of themselves. You can see their first London Film Festival diary here.

Check back for updates throughout the week as our intrepid (decrepid?) reporters cover the biggest and best of the festival and catch up with the likes of Tom Cruise, Ang Lee and (oh god, this can't end well) Halle Berry.
