He may not have used Mjolnir to smash any box office records, but Thor did strong business as the latest Marvel superhero pic opened in America with $66 million. The movie has now taken more than $242 million around the world.

Fast Five was pushed to second place, but held decently, nabbing $32.5 million, pushing its current total to $139.8 million. And it still managed to stay ahead of the two romantic comedies, warring family-themed Jumping the Broom, which beat expectations to make $13.7 million, and awfully reviewed Kate Hudson/Ginnifer Goodwin frenemy-fest Something Borrowed, which took home $13.1 million. Given that this weekend was Mother’s Day in the States, we expect those estimated figures to rise in the final tally, and there’s a vague chance that Borrowed could overtake Broom (doubt it, though). Rio filled out the top five with $8.3 million.

Water for Elephants slipped down to sixth place, earning $5.6 million while Tyler Perry’s latest, Madea’s Big Happy Family, sank to seventh and $3.9 million. Prom dropped to eighth with $2.4 million (it’s made $7.8 million so far) and Soul Surfer was ninth, taking $2.1 million. Finally, limping along and down from sixth place, unwanted sequel **Hoodwinked Too! **staggered to 10th and $1.8 million.
