Netflix has a supernatural treat to brighten up (or darken down?) your Halloween – finally announcing when the long-awaited streaming adaptation of The Witcher will be hitting the service. The show, based on the Polish fantasy novels by Andrzej Sapkowski which in turn inspired the hugely popular video game series, stars Henry Cavill as yellow-eyed monster bounty hunter Geralt Of Rivia, caught up in a saga of swords, sorcery, and scary monsters. (Super creeps TBC). The first season of the show has just been confirmed to arrive on 20 December – so factor that into your Christmas viewing.
As well as confirming the release date, Netflix shared a new trailer – showing Cavill getting slash-happy with his sword, promising major battles, and teasing some intense apocalyptic visions. Oh, and there’s a version of that famous bath shot from The Witcher III: Wild Hunt too, sure to send the thirstier corners of the internet wild.
Overseeing the series is showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hisserich, while the wider cast includes the likes of MyAnna Buring as Tissaia de Vries, Freya Allan as Princess Ciri, and Anya Chalotra as Jennifer. The show primarily shot last year in Hungary – and if the first season is a hit, there should be plenty of material across Sapkowski’s book series to run for several more.
