The actress Susannah York, best known for her work in films like **They Shoot Horses, Don't They? **and A Man For All Seasons, has died aged 72 following a battle with cancer.

York came to fame in the early '60s and sprang to fame in Tom Jones, as the brazen Sophie. She followed that up with the role of Sir Thomas More's daughter Margaret in A Man For All Seasons, as the lover of a female soap star in The Killing Of Sister George and a smaller part in Oh! What A Lovely War. She was Oscar nominated and a BAFTA winner for They Shoot Horses, Don't They?, and went on to play Kal-El's mother Lara in the Superman series.

During much of the 1970s she appeared in more offbeat films that were, on the whole, less successful, but in the late 1970s and 1980s she found success on stage and as a writer of children's books. Recently, York had starred in TV shows like Casualty, Holby City and Doctors. She is survived by a son and a daughter.
