Given that is has been 21 years since Cameron Crowe made the semi-autobiographical, '70s rock-steeped Almost Famous, it's surprising that he's only now gotten around to a film about that film's fictional group Stillwater, the band behind such tracks a... Sorry, we're being told this is actually a new drama from Spotlight's Tom McCarthy, featuring Matt Damon as a man who is trying to help his daughter.

Usually stories of fathers looking to get their daughters out of difficulties overseas fall more into the Taken style – lots of punching and shooting and descriptions of particular skillsets. Stillwater, however, promises something a little more realistic. Damon here is American oil-rig roughneck Bill Baker from Oklahoma, who travels to Marseille to visit his estranged daughter Allison (Abigail Breslin), in prison for a murder she claims she did not commit.

Confronted with language barriers, cultural differences, and a complicated legal system, Bill builds a new life for himself in France as he makes it his personal mission to exonerate his daughter.

With Camille Cottin, Deanna Dunagan and Lilou Siauvaud also in the cast, Stillwater will be in UK and Irish cinemas from 6 August.
