Aiming to make stealing cool again, Fox 2000 has nabbed the book rights to bestselling young-adult novel The Book Thief.

Okay, so maybe the company is just after source material for a new film. But with a heroine who goes to live with a German foster family and starts stealing books because she loves to read, what else are the kids meant to think?

Markus Zusak’s novel certainly has an interesting angle for a book aimed at teenagers – it’s narrated by Death. And the first book that Liesel – the thief of the title – pinches is called The Gravedigger’s Handbook. Mmm… Upbeat!
