Star Wars – Ubisoft Game

It’s a big week for Lucasfilm-related video game news. A few days ago, the iconic company unveiled its new Lucasfilm Games banner. Then yesterday we learned that a brand new Indiana Jones game is currently in the works over at Bethesda. And that’s not all – because word has just arrived that a new open-world Star Wars game is coming, set to unleash players into a galaxy far, far away, from the people over at Ubisoft.

The new Star Wars game is described as a “story-driven, open-world” game, and it’s being developed by Massive Entertainment – the team behind The Division, its sequel, and Far Cry 3. That’s an enticing prospect – not only looking to offer a different type of Star Wars game than the multiplayer-focused Battlefront titles, the Dark Souls-esque approach to adventure gaming in Jedi: Fallen Order, and the space-combat of Squadrons, but from a developer who offered an intriguing combination of story missions seamlessly blended with multiplayer environments in The Division games. As with those Tom Clancy titles, the new Star Wars game will run on the Snowdrop game engine.

“We know that fans of Star Wars value the feeling of immersion – of being transported into the Star Wars galaxy and moving through richly-detailed environments,” Lucasfilm Games VP Douglas Reilly told StarWars.com. “It’s fun to imagine what the team at Massive can do within Star Wars by bringing their innovative spirit and their commitment to quality.”

Very little is known about the game so far – which era it’ll play in, which characters might pop up, or how it might intersect with the upcoming slew of Star Wars shows and movies. And since it’s only just been announced, it’ll likely be a good while before the game arrives on the latest gen of consoles. In the meantime, it sounds like EA will still be producing some Star Wars games in future – with a Fallen Order sequel likely, though not officially confirmed yet. In the meantime, 2021 will bring the belated arrival of LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, a platformer encompassing all nine episodes of the central story.
