The Gotham Group, which helped bring** The Spiderwick Chronicles **to our screens, has bought up the rights to Kat Falls' adventure book **Dark Life **with an eye to turning it into an kid-friendly action movie.

Life, which won't land on book shelves until May,is set in the near future, where rising ocean levels and other natural catastrophes have forced some people to relocate to the sea floor.

But all - natch - is not well in the underwater utopia, as a teenage boy who lives below and a surface-dwelling girl discover a government conspiracy and must join forces to bring it to light. Some people, really… The Earth is screwed and there are still dodgy politicians? Goes to show how things really don't change, eh?

According to Gotham chief Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, the company was thrilled with Falls' watery world because, "We fell in love with the idea of an underwater Western."

Gotham is currently looking for a director before tackling the big task of selling it to a studio. It's City Of Ember! But wetter! No, bad example. It's Harry Potter! But with liquid! Better....
