Well, after days of teases with behind-the-scenes footage and pictures and such like, the trailer is online for the Wachowski siblings' Speed Racer (see it here) and it's rather interesting.
First up, it's clear that they have absolutely stuck to the story's anime roots. Not only are there bright colours and lots of neon and comedy kid sidekicks, but there're all those speed lines as Emile Hirsch's hero races along and some still-cartoonish special effects (check out that desert bit - there's probably still work to be done there). Heck, even Matthew Fox's line delivery sounds like one of the anime dubs - preternaturally calm and low pitched for maximum dramatic effect.
Sadly, it's also clear that the anime influence carry over into the annoying child role, inclusion of a chimp and oddly dressed bad guy henchmen. It also looks like everyone except Emile Hirsch and maybe Matthew Fox is playing this firmly tongue in cheek - which admittedly often seems to be the case with the cartoons as well. So all in all, it's clear that this is less Bound or The Matrix and more live-action cartoon for the Wachowskis - you know, for kids.
Speed Racer comes out here on May 16 2008.
