No, this isn't (yet) another story about Mel Gibson's controversial Christ film, but rather one with a far less theological subject matter. Frank Miller's cult crime graphic novel series, Sin City, is to find itself in very capable hands for its cinematic translation thanks to Once Upon a Time in Mexico director, Robert Rodriguez. Recognisable for its distinctive visual style, Sin City weaves a number of storylines concerning the various inhabitants of the city - a jungle of lowlifes, human predators and corruption. Purists need have little worry, though. Miller - responsible for Elektra, Hard Boiled and The Dark Knight Returns comic series - will be able to ensure that the film is faithful to his vision as Rodriguez has brought him on board as co-director and even shot a preliminary scene to assure the creator of his good intentions. "I'd been a fan of Sin City since it was published in 1991, and I always felt that when you walk into a comic book store, it jumps off the shelf at you," Rodriguez told Variety. "After doing the Spy Kids movies, I was looking to do something that would offer lighting and special effects challenges. I decided I didn't want to adapt Frank's book but rather translate it to the screen with the same visual flourishes that Frank used so well." Rodriguez has already shot the film's opening scene with stars Josh Hartnett and Mary Shelton but has still to cast the remaining roles before shooting commences in March.
