The appropriately named Charlie Sheen got a pat on the back this week for his efforts at beating the demon drugs - but he'll still be on probation until June 2000. The BBC reports that at a progress hearing this week Malibu Municipal judge Lawrence Mira praised the hellraising actor for his efforts, saying, "I want you to understand, I couldn't be more pleased with your effort".

But the compliment does not extend to a more lenient ruling, as Mira wants Sheen to remain under court scrutiny under next year. In 1997 Sheen recieved a suspended one year sentence and two years probation after accusaations of domestic violence againsthis then girlfriend Brittany Ashland, which was later reviewed after Sheen accidentally overdosed. He was given extra probation and ordered to attend drug rehabilitation, but left the designated rehab centre twice without permission. Unpreturbed, the actor told reporteers that he "will continue to fight the good fight", and that " it might have been the court that got me into this programme and this place in my life ... that is not what is keeping me here".
