The last Oscar ceremony of the millenium is going to be remembered as the Shakespeare year after John Madden’s Shakespeare In Love trounced Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan. With the final score weighing in at seven for the Bard and five for the Private. Shakespeare scooped Best Picture, Actress, Supporting Actress, Screenplay, Art Direction, Musical Score and Costume. Saving Private Ryan took home Best Director, Cinematography, Sound, Sound Effects Editing and Film Editing. Ryan was odds on for winning Best Picture but Spielberg ‘only’ managed Best Director saying, "Am I allowed to say I really wanted this?" before adding, "What I'd like to do is just thank very, very sincerely the families who lost sons during World War II. . .all the families who incurred the tremendous losses during this war."
