Shagging Fine, says Singapore

The risqu title of the Austin Powers sequel, The Spy Who Shagged Me, has been given a reprieve by the Board of Film Censorship (BFC) in Singapore. Last week we reported that censors were unhappy with the word ‘shag’ in the title and had suggested submitting ‘shoik’ instead, which means 'good' or 'nice'. Tickled though we were at the implications – Felicity Shoikwell, step forward – we couldn’t help feeling such a decision missed the point of Austin altogether. Happily, The Straits Times now reports that the BFC have changed their minds after seeing a trailer for he film. The paper printed a letter from the censors which said: "Today's educated Singaporeans are more mature and discerning enough to see the humour in it." Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery is to be released in Singapore on 24 June and it will reach UK screens on 30 July.
