Scream 6

Barely a year since the return of Ghostface in 2022’s self-conscious ‘requel’ Scream, there’s someone new already inhabiting the Edvard Munch-inspired horror mask – with the impending Scream VI presenting a fresh murder-spree, this time in the hustle and bustle of New York City. And while you might be forgiven for thinking that a sixth entry might signal a series getting somewhat tired, Scream (2022) – as we’re forced to continue naming it – proved to be more than just a copycat of Wes Craven’s original, bringing exciting new blood in its young cast, and directing duo Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin. Those directors have reteamed with screenwriters James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick for the requel-sequel, and you’ll find a brand new trailer below:

Blimey. Even by usual Ghostface standards, whoever’s donning the Halloween costume this time isn’t messing about – get ready for an intense shotgun stalking session, a shrine to previous killers, and a ferocious attack on Courteney Cox’s returning Gale Weathers. Could we be in for another (SPOILER ALERT FOR SCREAM ’22!) heart-breaking death of a legacy cast member following Dewey’s demise last time around?

Elsewhere, the trailer finds Melissa Barrera’s Sam Carpenter trying to work through her identity issues as the illegitimate daughter of original Scream killer Billy Loomis, the much anticipated return of Hayden Panettiere’s horror-authority Kirby from Scream 4, and a plot that finds Jenna Ortega’s Tara and friends not just trying to survive another set of murders, but hatching a plot to bring this latest Ghostface down. Plus, in true Scream style, there’s some amusing self-aware dialogue here: “You know you’re like, the tenth guy to try this, right? It never works out for the dipshit in the mask!” admonishes Gale. That the film looks like it could balance those zingers with genuine scares and stakes is the real magic of the Scream franchise.

Beyond the returning Cox, Barrera, Ortega, and Panettiere, Scream VI also brings back Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding as twins Mine and Chad Meeks-Martin, while new cast members include Samara Weaving, Henry Czerny, Tony Revolori, and Jack Champion. Find out if the six-quel lives up to the rest of the slasher saga when it hits UK cinemas on 10 March.
