After months of speculation, and that saucy trailer, Stanley Kubrick's final film Eyes Wide Shut, has been given an R certificate in the States, ending rumours that it would be slapped with a dreaded NC-17, tantamount to commercial suicide. Nonchalant Warner Bros executives say that the decision was never in doubt, but it clear that despite their calm attitude, star Tom Cruise - who if the footage so far is anything to go by is threatening to finally reveal his Top Gun to the viewing public -took the issue very seriously. He is quoted as saying that if anyone tried to alter the movie "they'd have to get through me." The decision will also crush the hopes of any fans who hoped that the film would be their chance to see Nicole Kidman and Cruise doing what they normally do within the confines of their bedroom. When he was alive, Kubrick had apparently always talked about wanting to make a hard-core sex film. However, the R rating, which means that people of any age can see the movie as long as they are accompanied by an adult, probably implies there are no exceptionally explicit sex scenes.
