Romero Wants To Put The Thing On Stage

During one of the weirder moments in the Empire office this week, we were having a chat about all things scary with horror maestro George A Romero when he let slip about his future slate.

Now bear with us because we’re still processing the details ourselves but the undisputed king of the zombies plans to remake The Thing… On stage… In a frozen theatre.

“I watched The Thing many, many times but there’s a reason for that,” said the 68-year-old scare-meister. “I keep trying to get hold of the rights and I’d love to do it as a stage play.

“I’d love to freeze the whole audience - first of all, we’d have to chill the whole theatre down to some sub-zero temperature.”

Turns out that The Thing From Another World (the original, not John Carpenter’s version) was the film that inspired Romero to get into filmmaking when he was just a little nipper.

“I guess as a young kid it was Christian Nyby’s The Thing From Another World,” Romero said of his movie inspiration. “It really worked, it really scared me. Now it’s very hard for me to get scared – although I can intellectually appreciate a horror movie.”

Well, we’ve already had Evil Dead The Musical (don’t believe us about that? Click here for proof), so we reckon the Dead man should get his chance to tread the boards. Now if we all give one pound, we can make a scary old man’s dream come true…
