Back in August, we brought word of the surprise announcement that Ridley Scott would actually be the man to develop and direct Alcon Entertainment’s new take on the Blade Runne****r universe. Few details were available then, but now Scott has talked to the Wall Street Journal about the film, admitting what most of us have already figured, that it’s “liable to be a sequel.”

Though everything remains mostly up in the air, from the tone of Scott’s comments, he’s actually further along with the project than you might realise. “I think I’m close to finding a writer that might be able to help me deliver,” Scott says. “We’re quite a long way in, actually.”

We’ll still have to wait and see what the final shape of the film is, though according to the director, you shouldn’t expect to see any of the old faces back on screen – when asked if Harrison Ford’s Deckard might return, he simply replied, “No, not really.”

He was also forthcoming about why he thinks audiences had issues with the original, something he ascribes to different expectations. “Even though people think it’s a cool Philip Marlowe film with Deckard played by Harrison Ford, the film is very much about humanity.”

Bet he realises there are considerable expectations for the new film, too…
