From the files of “I liked it so much, I bought the company”: according to Vulture, Ridley Scott is angling to form a partnership with Symphony 3D, which manufactures 3D glasses and the MasterImage 3D projection screen.
With many of the recent big hits like Avatar earning lots of extra moolah from inflated 3D ticket prices, it’s hardly surprising that the director would want to get in on a company that’s looking to challenge the relative dominance of bigger players like RealD. The MasterImage option has one big attractive advantage for cinema owners – they buy the system outright, which means no royalties to eat into their ticket sales.
While Scott has yet to dip his toe into 3D filmmaking, he’s planning to shoot the Alien prequels in the format and with his legendary perfectionism, it makes sense for him to want to have more control over how the finished product is shown.
If all the contracts work out, the new joint venture will be called Scott Three Productions. Because his production company is Scott Free and the new team make 3D products. D’you see what he did there?
