With the final season of Game Of Thrones now making its long march through editing rooms and VFX sequences on the way to our screens next year, HBO is looking to tear a page out of Harry Potter's book and license standing sets (and some locations) as attractions tied to the show.
The cable channel's team is already at work to turn locations such as County Down's Castle Ward (Winterfell), the Castle Black location in Magheramorne and the main sets in Belfast's Linen Mill Studios are just some of the places being opened up to fans – for a fee, of course.
"HBO is thrilled to celebrate the work of the Game Of Thrones creative team and crew by preserving these locations and inviting fans to visit Northern Ireland and explore Westeros in person," says HBO licensing and retail vice president Jeff Peters. "We look forward to opening the gates and sharing the excitement of stepping inside these amazing sets with Game Of Thrones fans from around the world. The opportunity to celebrate Northern Ireland’s pivotal role in the life and legacy of the show and share its culture, beauty and warmth is also a huge inspiration behind these legacy projects."
It should mean a further tourism boost to Northern Ireland, and should make for a fun opportunity. We just hope it goes better than that time Jeffrey the Night King put his frosty gaff up on Scarebnb and came home to a ruined ice palace.
