Quirky German Director Making Di Film

Controversy magnet tackles tragedy

Looks like Stephen Frears’ The Queen won’t be the only film tackling the events surrounding the death of Princess Diana.

Because controversial German director Christoph Schlingensief is also going to have a crack at the tragedy. And given his history, “cracked” might be the better word. See, Schlingensief is the bad boy of the German arthouse cinema world, a man who loves to shock and shove the boundaries of taste. He’s famous for such films as Freakstars 3000, which takes a jab at American Idol with the handicapped, and 100 Years Of Adolf Hitler, a laugh-a-minute spoof of the Third Reich.

He sounds more Cartman than Kieslowski, and his Diana will be played by Germany’s answer to Kate Moss – party girl Jenny Elvers. "Jenny is my Princess Diana, because, like Diana, she is a screen on which people project their longings and aspirations," Schlingensief told the German tabloid Bild. The director has already shot footage in Paris and will hit London later in the year, with a release scheduled for next year to tie in with the 10th anniversary of Princess Diana's death.

Somewhere, the Daily Mail printing team just ordered a lake of ink.
