First dates can be awkward at the best of times – there’s an entire TV show built around that concept – but you’d be hard-pressed to beat what happens to Get Out’s Daniel Kaluuya and newcomer Jodie Turner-Smith in the new drama Queen & Slim, which has its first trailer online.
The pair play the titular characters, who meet less than cute on a date that seems destined to end in a polite handshake and never seeing one another again. But then they’re stopped by a police officer, and things escalate from there.
And when we say “escalate”, we mean that the duo, a retail worker and criminal defence lawyer, don’t just have a bad night. They’re spurred into becoming "the black Bonnie And Clyde," going on the run and forging a deep, unexpected connection along the way.
Bokeem Woodbine, Chloë Sevigny and Sturgill Simpson are all in the cast for this one, written by Lena Waithe (based on an idea by A Million Little Pieces’ James Frey, apparently) and directed by Melina Matsoukas. Queen & Slim will arrive in the UK on 31 January next year
