But there's no joy for DVD

While it may be too early for queues to start forming, George Lucas has ensured it will be a profitable spring for video retailers this year with the announcement that The Phantom Menace will be released for sale worldwide in April 2000. Unlike the long wait that fans had to endure between the film making its theatrical release in the States and UK, the video release is set to take place globally between 3-8 April. The sole exception, for some unknown reason is France (sorry, guys) who won't get the video until Autumn. Although the video will be of the highest quality, being digitally mastered by THX for superior sound and picture quality, DVD owners will be distraught to find that Lucas has no date in mind for a DVD release of The Phantom Menace. In an announcement made on the film's official site, all Lucasfilm would commit to on a DVD release was that it would not take place in 2000.
