In recent years, few films have proved as extraordinary as Portrait Of A Lady On Fire – a searingly cinematic slow-burning romance that refuses to be forgotten. And if you were beguiled by its director Céline Sciamma – also behind Girlhood, Tomboy and Water Lillies – then you’re in luck, because she’s back with a brand new film, arriving later this year. It’s called Petite Maman, and stars Joséphine Sanz as eight year-old Nelly, a girl who’s just lost her grandmother. Staying at her grandmother’s home, Nelly soon meets fellow eight-year-old Marion (Joséphine’s twin sister, Gabrielle Sanz) in the woods, sparking a fairytale adventure between the two. With its gorgeous autumnal palette, striking cinematography, and clear emotional depth, Petite Maman looks set to be another must-see film from the reliably brilliant Sciamma. And if that trailer gave you a slight My Neighbour Totoro vibe, with two girls adventuring in a forest, Sciamma recently spoke to Empire about how she was inspired by Hayao Miyazaki. “I used him as a compass,” she explained in the Shang-Chi issue, currently on sale. “He takes children seriously, he takes female characters seriously. He has a serious connection to nature. Sometimes to solve a question on set I would ask, ‘What would Miyazaki do?’”
