Made for the equivalent of loose change and a couple of conkers*, Peter Strickland's Katalin Varga was one of the British filmmaking debuts of last year. The Reading-born director will now get the chance to see what he do can with less meagre budgets, according to Screen Daily who report that he's signed on to direct Berberian Sound Studio, an Italian-set horror film.

Berberian Sound Studio, which tells the story of a sound engineer whose work for an Italian horror studio becomes a terrifying case of life imitating art, will shoot in Italy later this year. Its part English, part Italian-language script shouldn't phase Strickland overly: **Katalin Varga **was filmed entirely in Hungarian, a language he doesn't speak.

The film is being co-produced by Warp-X and Illuminations Films, and is partly financed by the Uk Film Council's development fund.
