Peter Benchley, whose novel Jaws caused thousands of people to reconsider their swimming plans, has died aged 65.

Despite the plot of the book, Benchley became one of the strongest advocates for the conversation of sharks. His wife, Wendy Benchley, said that he died Saturday night from pulmonary fibrosis, a progressive and fatal scarring of the lungs. He is survived by three children and five grandchildren.
