Paramount Pictures has snapped up US writer Jonathan Tropper’s new novel After Hailey for more than $1 million.

After a hefty bidding war that saw the studio win out over Warner Brothers and New Line the film version will now be produced by Saturday Night Live honcho Lorne Michaels.

So what makes the book so hot? Er… Well… It’s not published until next year, so that’s not entirely clear. We do know it’s about a 20-something man who falls for and marries an older woman. But soon after they move to the suburbs, she dies and he has to raise her teenaged son.

And Tropper has a history with Hollywood – two of his previous books are currently traipsing through Development Hell. Everything Changes is being considered by Sony for Tobey Maguire and Book Of Joe is sitting in Warner Bros’ “must adapt” pile.
