They liked it, so they’re putting another Ring on it. Yes, Paramount has decided to make another instalment of the horror series based on the Japanese originals, and – of course! – it’ll be made in 3D.
It’s been a while since much was heard about the Ring series, which launched here in 2003, helped make Gore Verbinski’s career and spawned a sequel in 2005. But like the horror of the cursed videotape at its centre, the franchise hasn’t gone away entirely, just lain dormant waiting to ensnare new victims.
Oh, and it was trapped in limbo while Paramount and DreamWorks tried to figure out which projects would go with which studio after the big split. Which is a lot less exciting.
David Loucka, who wrote the currently-filming Daniel Craig thriller Dream House, has been hired to crank out a script for the new movie, which the Heat Vision Blog reports will likely ditch characters like Naomi Watts’ Rachel in favour of a younger (or perhaps cheaper) cast.
Which brings to mind a problem: one possible idea has teenagers locating a copy of the mysterious video. But would they even know what to do with a VHS? Bet they try to shoehorn in YouTube somewhere…
While we’re not sure every project needs to be in 3D, the idea of something nasty creeping out of a TV, and by extension, cinema screens, does actually sound like it might work given an extra dimension.
