Matrix snubbed in SFX Oscar nominations

The Wachowski brothers must be ready to go out and lamp someone now that the Academy has officially ruled their effects-laden Matrix sequels out of the Oscar race. As the seven contenders for the Best Visual Effects Oscar were lined up, both The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions were conspicuous by their absence. Return of the King, Hulk, X-Men 2, Master and Commander, Peter Pan, Pirates of the Caribbean and Terminator 3 were all given the nod but the Matrix films - with a combined effects budget of more than $100 million - didn't get so much as a look in. You can't help but laugh really, can you? The Wachowskis were likely expecting (or at least hoping) to repeat the Oscar success of the first film's digital achievements but the fact that the sequels' effects are so similar to their predecessor's looks to have nipped that particular dream in the bud. The seven titles will be whittled down to a final three nominees - to be announced on 27 January along with all the other categories.
