The two have been tussling for the top spot since their theatrical releases last year but this week the Nazgul ran roughshod over the students of Hogwarts as The Lord of The Rings: The Fellowship of The Ring shattered the DVD and video record set by Harry Potter and The Philosopher's Stone. A torrent of marauding punters laid siege to stores up and down the country on Tuesday when the first episode in the Tolkien saga was finally made available to own. British fans took home a total of 1.27 million copies of the film in one day, blowing Potter's previous record of 1.25 million firmly out of the water. The rivalry between the two franchises has been fierce since release dates set them a month apart last year and stalwarts from both camps have been doing their level best to see the opposing side off ever since. Time will tell whether Lord of The Rings will win the war but Peter Jackson can enjoy a mug of victory ale until hostilities kick of afresh with round two this Christmas.
