About a month ago, it was rumoured that Robert Zemeckis had his eyes on yet another Christmas-associated tale: The Nutcracker. But while there's yet to be any confirmation that he'll get his performance capture paws on the story, New Line is going ahead with its own version.

Best known from the Christmas ballet featuring music from Tchaikovsky in 1892, the plot actually has its roots in ETA Hoffman's 1816 story The Nutcracker And The Mouse King.

Now it'll be reworked by writer Darren Lemke as a family action-adventure tale that focuses on a 12-year-old girl whose festive gift of a Nutcracker doll leads her off on an adventure involving a seven-headed Mouse King and his rodent army.

Yes kids, it sounds like a Christmas treat. Apparently it'll be similar in style to The Chronicles Of Narnia, so expect lots of CG and animatronic beasties, plus nightmares for anyone under seven after viewing...
