Now Disney’s Off To Prom

More High School. But less musical.

Now Disney’s Off To Prom

Given the massive success of High School Musical, which spawned sequels, a raft of merchandising and other tie-in opportunities and a batch of new young stars, it’s not shocking to learn that Disney wants to dip back into the teen/tween crowd for a new comedy: Prom.

This time, however, there won’t be as much singing and dancing (except for the event itself, of course) and the plot will follow a group of teenagers preparing for the big night.

Variety reports that Disney is aiming for a John Hughes / Cameron Crowe-tone this time (lofty goals indeed), with the studio waiting for Katie Welch’s script before it decides whether to scout for total unknowns as the leads or splash a little more cash to hire name brand talent.

The man in charge of getting it all together is Joe Nussbaum, who has worked on the likes of Sydney White and Sleepover. And the whole project is something of an anomaly in Hollywood: it was launched by the previous Disney regime, but current president of production Sean Bailey has opted to keep it alive, mostly thanks to his position as producer on the film before he got his shiny new executive job.
